Community Meal Sites in North Quabbin

Bethany Lutheran Church, 62 Cheney Street, in Orange hosts free community dinners every Monday & Thursday beginning at 5:30 p.m. Sponsored by Franklin County Community Meals Program. For more information call (413) 772-1033.

St. John’s Episcopal Church, 15 Park Ave in Athol, hosts free community dinners on the second Friday of each month from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m. Free will offerings are appreciated and help to support the dinners. For more information call (978) 249-8687.

The Fuel Assistance Program (LIHEAP) assists low-income households in Franklin County by paying a portion of their home heating costs. The program is available to both homeowners and renters and covers the primary source of heat. (North Quabbin towns included in Franklin County are Orange, Erving, New Salem, Wendell & Warwick).

Program eligibility and payment amounts are determined by family size and gross annual household income. Payments are not intended to cover the entire annual cost of heating the home, and are applied to billing between November 1st and March 30th.

When households receive Fuel Assistance, they are also automatically eligible for a discount on their electric and telephone bills.

The Fuel assistance program is for income eligible residents of Athol, Petersham, Phillipston and Royalston. The office also arranges for emergency fuel delivers and provides advocacy services with local fuel and electric companies.

Our mission is to work in partnership with the community to alleviate hunger in Franklin County. FCCMP services free dinners 5 evenings a week in Greenfield, Turners Falls & Orange. We also run a Food Pantry located at 7 S. Main Street in Orange which is open on Thursdays.

Meals in Orange are Monday and Thursday evenings at the Bethany Lutheran Church, 62 Cheney Street. Doors open at 5 pm and meal is served at 5:30 pm. ALL ARE WELCOME!

The Massachusetts Good Neighbor Energy Fund is available to any Massachusetts resident who, because of temporary financial difficulty, cannot meet a month’s energy expense and is not eligible for state or federal energy assistance. Income for either the prior 12 months or the past month (times 12 months for a total annual figure) must fall between 60%-80% of the state’s median income levels.

Eligibility guidelines for 2008-2009 are as follows:

Emergency Grant Applications will be accepted starting December1, 2008. All other Grant Applications will be accepted starting January 1, 2009. The grant per eligible household is $300 per season, regardless of the amount owed. Grants for a household must be paid directly to the vendor(s). You may apply by contacting your local Salvation Army Service Center.

North Quabbin Energy is an informal group of people in the North Quabbin region of north-central Massachusetts who are concerned about issues relating to energy use. We seek to educate ourselves and our neighbors about the true social and environmental costs of our current energy consumption patterns. We also work to find ways of changing our individual and collective habits of energy use through conservation, use of renewable fuels, and support for local and regional enterprises that reduce our dependence on imported resources.

Project Bread’s Food Source Hotline provides information and referral services to people facing hunger in Massachusetts. Food Source Hotline counselors refer callers to food resources in their communities, as well as information about food stamps and other programs. The Hotline can help hungry families in 140 languages, and is able to also serve hearing impaired callers.
