DIAL/SELF Youth & Community Services is a community-based non-profit agency dedicated to promoting the health and positive development of teens/young adults in Franklin and Hampshire Counties and the North Quabbin region.

DIAL/SELF – North Quabbin provides free clinical services, information and referral, and case management through their TeenLine program (ages 16-21) including emergency housing options. In collaboration with the YWCA of Western MA, eligible young men and women can receive parenting/pregnancy services up to age 24 through the TeenLine Program.

Our new Transition to Independent Living Program (ages 16-21) offers services to young adults as they transition from homelessness to living independently in safe, stable circumstances. DIAL/SELF services are free! Please call or stop by at any time!

Greater Athol Area Advocates for Families with Special Needs

The Greater Athol Area Advocates for Families with Special Needs (GAAAFSN), a program of The United ARC, provides community-based family and individual supports/services to people with Mental Retardation and other specific developmental disabilities. In order to access supports, the child or adult must be eligible for Department of Mental Retardation services.

These supports/services include:

  • IFFS (intensive flexible family support)

  • Family and community education workshops

  • Information & referral

  • Referral for intake and eligibility to the Department of Developmental Services

  • Social & Recreational events

If you’re a young parent 21 and under and this is your first child Healthy Families is a state-wide program that can help you become the parent that you know you can be. In this program, you get to decide when and where you’d like to meet and work with your Home Visitor to achieve the goals that you set for yourself in life and being a parent. It’s also a great place to network and meet other young parents and find out what services there are for you in the community. All of our services are free and confidential. Here, it is all about you and your child!

Seeds of Solidarity brings to life the connection between environmental and social justice issues through research, demonstration, and hands-on education. Our work is a response to the inequitable distribution of resources and ecological destruction that plague communities locally and globally. We partner with the schools to promote wellness through school gardens and greenhouses. Seeds of Solidarity Education Center provides educational programs that promote regional food and energy self-reliance. We try to contribute to the vitality of the area through our SOL (Seeds of Leadership) Garden program for area teenagers, and through the annual North Quabbin Garlic and Arts Festival (www.garlicandarts.org)

  • North Quabbin Young Leaders’ Council Work with other youth and help schools, towns, agencies & businesses meet the needs of youth! Ages 16-19. Weekly meetings held in Orange.

  • Teen Cyber Café Enjoy free access to computers with hi-speed Internet, games, artwork, and information on teen services. $2 one-time sign-up fee. Ages 13-21. Open weekdays, 9:00-5:30 p.m. at 26 South Main Street in Orange.

Youth Programs

Community Action! Youth Programs provides free prevention and enrichment programs to low-income youth and young adults (ages 6-21) in Hampshire County, Franklin County, and the North Quabbin region. Many activities are offered, including prevention groups, enrichment activities, recreation programming, peer leadership opportunities and individual counseling and advocacy.\

  • All Stars:  A group for boys ages 10-14 in Turners Falls, Athol (through 10/31) for substance/violence prevention.

  • Diversity:  (Name yet to be determined) A peer leadership group for middle school age youth of color and their anti-racist allies in the Greenfield area. Activities include exploration of cultural identities and social justice issues, community trips and dancing.

  • GLASS (Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Society):  A confidential social/support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth and their straight allies. Youth ages 12 – 21 are welcome. GLASS provides community education on homophobia and GLBTQQ youth issues in Franklin County.

  • Generation Q:  A confidential social/support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth and their straight allies. Youth ages 12 – 21 are welcome. Generation Q provides community education on homophobia and GLBTQQ youth issues in Hampshire County.

  • LAUNCH:  Middle School and High School age youth development & leadership group in Hampshire County.

  • Peanuts:  For boys and girls ages 6 – 9. Group focus is on problem solving and non-violent communication in Greenfield and Orange.

  • TREE:  A transgender support group for ages 12 – 21 in Hampshire County.

  • Youth Works:  An employment support group for ages 12 – 21. Franklin County.

Experience a variety of arts and activities at the Athol Area YMCA
Mondays – Fridays 2:15 – 5:00 pm
September 29, 2008 – May of 2009

Cost is $1.00 per visit or $20 per month or $80 for the whole school year, members of the YMCA are FREE! No one will be turned away due to inability to pay. This program is open to Middle School age students throughout the nine-town North Quabbin Region. (Athol, Erving, Orange, New Salem, Petersham, Phillipston, Royalston, Warwick, Wendell)

YouthReach! Is your arts, sports and fitness based after school program for North Quabbin Middle School kids, grades 6 – 8. We offer the opportunity to explore your imagination and creativity as well as the space and time to be yourself and have fun. Including the following:

  • Art

  • Swimming

  • Poetry

  • Singing

  • Yoga

  • Sports/Games

  • Movies

  • Music

  • Fitness

  • Cooking

  • Photography

There is also a ‘Homework Help Center’ available to those who need it in our quiet classroom on the second floor. The room is equipped with two iMac computers that you can use to do homework or write papers. Monday – Thursday from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m.
